We have a really wonderful theatre in Tyler. They show great  moves-new and old-and each month they usually have a theme-I am not sure what it is in May-Can you guess-here is what they are featuring through the first part of the month-Starting with one of my favorite movie stars!!

Tickets are $7
Ethan Edwards, returns from the Civil War to the Texas ranch of his brother, he hopes to find a home with his family and to be near the woman he secretly loves. But a Comanche raid destroys these plans, and Ethan sets out, along with his 1/8 Indian nephew Martin, on a years-long journey to find his niece who has been kidnapped by the Indians under Chief Scar. But as the quest goes on, Martin begins to realize that his uncle's hatred for the Indians is beginning to spill over onto his now-assimilated niece. Martin becomes uncertain whether Ethan plans to rescue Debbie...or kill her.

The Last Picture Show - 1971 Starring Cybill Shepherd and Jeff Bridges

Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $7
In West Texas, in the lull between World War Two and the Korean Conflict, Sonny and Duane are best friends. Enduring that awkward period of life between boyhood and manhood, the two pass their time the best way they know how -- at the movie house, playing football, and girls. Jacey is Duane's steady, wanted by every boy in school, and she knows it. Her daddy is rich and her mom is good looking and loose. It's the general consensus that whoever wins Jacey's heart will be set for life. But this small town is dying a quiet death as folks head for the big cities to make their livings and raise their kids. The boys are torn between a future somewhere out there beyond the borders of town or making do with their inheritance of a run-down pool hall and a decrepit movie house -- the legacy of their friend and mentor, Sam the Lion. As high school graduation approaches, they learn some difficult lessons about love, loneliness, and jealousy. Then folks stop attending the second-run features at the ...

Red River - 1948 Starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift

Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $7
Tom Dunson builds a cattle empire with his adopted son Matthew Garth. Together they begin a massive cattle drive north from Texas to the Missouri railhead. But on the way, new information and Dunson's tyrannical ways cause Matthew to take the herd away from Dunson and head to a new railhead in Kansas. Dunson, swearing vengeance, pursues.

David Berkeley in concert with Shawn James

Friday, May 17 at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $18 on line and $25 at the door (cash)
David Berkeley is an evocative singer-songwriter with, "Emotional story-telling lyrics, charismatic stage presence, and hilarious anecdotes" (June Wulff, THE BOSTON GLOBE). Dubbed, “A musical poet” by the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, David was named one of WXPN's “Artists to Watch,” wrote his song “Fire Sign” for the CBS series Without a Trace and went on to perform on World CafĂ©, Mountain Stage, XM’s Loft Sessions, WFUV with John Platt and radio and television stations across the country. He received ASCAP’s Johnny Mercer Songwriter Award and, perhaps most notably, performed on PRI’s This American Life, telling the awkward and hilarious story of a private serenade he was hired to perform to help a guy win back an ex-girlfriend. Don't miss this evening with the enchanting David Berkeley featuring songs from his new album, THE FIRE IN MY HEAD.

And to start us off for the evening our opening act Shawn James.

Born on the south side of Chicago, Shawn James had a hardworking, kind mother and a gambling, abusive, drunk father. He grew up singing in church and was drawn to the emotional and ethereal power that music could have over people. It was there that he found his escape and learned how to harness his unique, soulful voice.

Shawn now lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas playing a raw, haunting mix of Blues, Folk, and Soul music. You might catch him playing on the street in the rain some night, rockin at a bar while you get rowdy, or you might just find him performing an intimate set for friends at a house show. No matter where you see him, just make sure you have your eyes and ears open, his performance will be one you won't forget.

Two more moves in May--Bernie and Dazed and Confused-we will talk about those in the next blog!

Another place that features really interesting artists is The Old Firehouse in Edom.
Nick Annis: Live, Original, Acoustic Concert

•Saturday, May 11th, 2013 @ 7:30pm
Nick Annis finds the spoken word, either plain or set to music and accompanied by instruments, more alive than anything written. His way with words touches heart and conscience while addressing issues of fairness and everyday life.
He is admired by folk fans for the storytelling talent that makes his performances so memorable in the style of brilliant songwriter/storytellers like Gamble Rogers, John McCutcheon, and Dave Carter. Drawing on his diverse background and Greek roots, Nick crafts "true" stories and timeless accounts of humanity.
An award-winning songwriter, Nick was honored to have his spoken word piece, "In the Beginning," recorded by Chuck Brodsky on his CD "Tulips for Lunch". Nick’s song "By My Silence", co-written with Ellen Bukstel, has been covered by Sonia (Splash), Sam Weiser (Sam I Am) and is being sung now by church choirs in six states.

Historic US80 Hi-Way Sale

Coast to Coast - 3rd Weekend in April
East Texas Tourism Association is proud to announce the 2013 dates for the US Hwy 80 Sale for the third weekend in April & October. The Historic US 80 Hi-Way Sale will begin at 8:00am daily on April 19th, 20th & 21st and on October 18th-20th and should draw crowds from far and wide looking for a bargain.

Organized to promote and increase tourism trade and traffic along historic US 80, the first coast-to-coast, all-weather highway in America, the 2,400 mile route begins in Savannah, Ga., makes its way through East Texas and concludes in San Diego, California. The three-state event will cover a 392 mile route – one of the nation’s longest –from Mesquite, TX through Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi.
“We intend to keep the name and legacy alive,” said Mary Ramos, “There will be hundreds of sales going on…more than you can shop in a day. This is a great fund-raising opportunity for churches, civic clubs and individuals.”
The event is part of ETTA’s 22nd year effort to draw attention to the byways of its region. Each city along the US 80 route will be responsible for its part in the Hwy 80 Sale.
News of the sale is spreading among antique car, motorcycle, RV clubs and flea market enthusiast. While shoppers will be searching for great deals, cities along the route hope they find the highway’s more permanent treasures, such as bed and breakfasts, motels, restaurants, and historical sites.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile, By Steve Martin (yes, the comedian), and directed by TJC faculty member Jacob Davis will be held at the Jean Browne Theatre on April 24-28, 2013 @ 7:30pm and 28th at 2pm. Theatre TJC box office opens Wed., April 17, 2013. Box office hours are 10am-6pm weekdays throughout the run of performances.
Ticket prices are $5.

What if Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso had once met and somehow sensed they were about to change the world through their science and art? The year is 1904 and both men are destined to be the biggest names in their fields in the 20th century and they meet in a bar called the Lapin Agile in Mountmarte, Paris, where they explore the value of genius and talent while interacting with a host of other characters. This wiggly, adult-oriented comedy by Steve Martin is every bit as cerebral and inventively odd as the comedian who wrote it.

Susan Cowsill April 13 at 8pm

Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door

To learn more about Susan go to http://susancowsill.com/
"Just Believe It" is Susan Cowsill's first-ever solo album, but you probably already know her. The singer/songwriter made her initial mark on popular culture at the tender age of eight with The Cowsills, the 60s family pop group that not only scored Top Ten singles "The Rain, the Park and Other Things", "Hair" and "We Can Fly".
During Susan’s decade with roots-pop supergroup The Continental Drifters, she won the hearts of discerning listeners with her impassioned vocals and personally-charged songwriting, gracing three widely-acclaimed albums and a decade’s worth of riveting performances. Cowsill's vocal talents have beautifully supported recordings from artists as diverse as Dwight Twilley, Redd Kross, and The Smithereens, while her compositions have been covered by The Bangles and Hootie and the Blowfish.

Cowsill's much-loved prior work can now be viewed as a prelude to the stunning solo achievement of "Just Believe It". The collection marks a musical and personal milestone for the artist, embodying the same qualities of musical craft and emotional nuance that distinguished her work with The Continental Drifters, while adding a deeper, more resonant and unmistakably personal edge.

For this show at Liberty Hall Cowsill will perform many of her past songs as well as those from her newest CD release, "Lighthouse", with her drummer Russ Broussard (Continental Drifters).

Whether she's delivering a heart-tugging ballad or belting out a punchy rock tune, critics agree that Susan Cowsill has an exceptional talent for connecting with a song's emotional core. Rolling Stone praised "Just Believe It" as "The hardy, heartbreaking sound of…a bar-band angel…in the prime of her singing and songwriting life." Take advantage of her time in Tyler and come....

OPENING FOR SUSAN IS Lauren Alexander.  http://laurenalexander.com/

Lauren Alexander is a singer, songwriter, and musician from East Texas. With two albums under her belt, including "Perfume and Gasoline", which held three Texas Music Chart radio hits, Lauren is in the early stages of recording for her third album. Lauren, who is a 12-year veteran of the music industry, describes her music as a blend of folk rock, and blues with a strong country vibe.
She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with talented artists such as Josh Abbott, Aaron Watson and The Eli Young Band, just to name a few.
